Dr. Larry R. Smith, PhD.
Dr. Smith was born August 12, 1937, the youngest of five, to J. Herbert and Emma. He graduated high school in 1955 in Bismarck, Illinois. After working the family farm outside of Danville, Larry received his BA in music from Illinois State University in Normal. Larry taught in Illinois secondary schools before completing his PhD in Communications at the University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana in 1970.
Dr. Smith came to Springfield in the spring of 1971 as one of the founding instructors for Sangamon State University, now the University of Illinois at Springfield. He served that institution and the community of Springfield as Professor of Communication until December 31, 2000. He was awarded the honor of Emeritus Professor at his retirement.
Music and language were enduring passions for Larry. He founded the Sangamon State University Early Music Ensemble and performed with them until 2000. Shortly after arriving in Springfield, Larry began studying and collecting writing on food.
Dr. Smith died after a lengthy illness, on Monday, May 26, 2008 in Schenectady, N.Y.
